SE7588 : Water pump in CroptonSE7588 : Old pump and water troughThis apparatus on the village green at Cropton has no handle, so is probably a water pillar (supplied from pressurised mains) rather than a pump with a mechanism for raising water. The fluted base and decorative top, well seen in Pauline's photo, are typical of such pillars which are found in many rural locations and must go back to the time when newer properties were yet connected to the mains. This one and its accompanying trough have been nicely restored.
