Lower Bridge over the Bruar Water

The natural water falls of the Bruar Water in Bruar Glen are cloaked by mixed larch and Scots Pine. Robert Burns visited the glen to admire the falls during his Highland tour in 1787 and noted them to be 'Exceedingly picturesque and beautiful, but the effect is much impaired by the want of trees and shrubs'. When arriving in Inverness, Burns addressed the Duke of Atholl with 'The Humble Petition of Bruar Water' in which he urged the fourth Duke to plant its bleak banks with trees. In 1796 the Duke planted trees around the banks of the Bruar Water, laid out the paths and built bridges and summer houses as a memorial to Burns.
