International link train at Crewe
The sight of a HST (high-speed train) at Crewe is not unusual. What is interesting here is that it was forming a Eurostar feed service from Liverpool to London Waterloo. The service was introduced when international services from Waterloo started in 1994, to avoid the need for passengers from the North and Midlands to have to cross London by underground train. It had to use diesel trains like this because parts of the line around London are not electrified on the same system as the main lines to the North.
The service only attracted a small number of customers and was withdrawn not long after this.
