Tracks at Springburn station
A "rumble strip" has been welded to the top surface of the tracks at Platforms 3 and 4 for the last 50 metres or so before the buffer stops. These zig-zag patterned welds ensure a good electrical contact between the rail and wheel for track circuit purposes. Rumble strips are commonly used where the train service is insufficient to ensure that rust, detritus and contaminants do not build up on the surface of the rail and thus inhibit train detection.
