Mortsafes in Logierait kirkyard
Mortsafes in Logierait kirkyard
Mortsafes date from the beginning of the 19th century and were designed to protect freshly buried corpses from the attentions of the 'resurrection men' (aka body snatchers) who sold the corpses to anatomists. Mortsafes came in a variety of different designs, several of which are represented elsewhere on Geograph. Mortsafes could be reused after 6 to 8 weeks. The smaller mortsafe on the right is for a child.
