Aberthaw Lime Works - Internal South East Wall
Aberthaw Lime Works - Internal South East Wall
Ivy covered walls of Aberthaw Lime Works. A Grade II listed building, the Aberthaw Lime Works was opened on 22 December 1888, by the Aberthaw Pebble Limestone Company. It was built to process the limestone pebbles rather than transport them inland or elsewhere by boat. The works ceased production in 1926.

Built of local limestone rubble with red brick dressings to the openings and chimney, the works feature a large rectangular block with two kilns that were capable of producing up to 40 tons of burnt lime a day. Next to the main structure there are 2 more kilns which were built later than the main structure.
Aberthaw lime was famous for its hydraulic qualities. It was a 1 to 1 mixture of pozzolana and Aberthaw lime that was instrumental in the construction of the old Eddystone lighthouse in Plymouth.
