Former winding tower, Leeds Central Station
Former winding tower, Leeds Central Station
This winding tower is a remnant of Leeds Central Station, which opened in 1848 and closed in 1967. It sits uneasily between a retail park and modern office blocks. The station was built on 2 levels, trains used the top level, and there were trapdoors in the platforms through which goods could be lowered to wagons and lorries on the lower level. For more description see the Leodis website LinkExternal link and the tower can be seen on the left of an aerial photo of the station from 1964 here LinkExternal link
