Thurnham Castle
Thurnham Castle
The skeletal remains of this 12th century flint-built castle are now part of the White Horse Wood country park (not yet officially open). Since it was purchased by the Kent County Council some work has been done to clear the site of undergrowth and make it more accessible to the public. No information is yet displayed on the nice new information boards but it looks to me as if all facing flints have been robbed away (possibly to be used in facing Thurnham Keep - see TQ8057). The flint castle is said to date from the 12th century but very likely replaced some earlier structure. It commands a great view across Maidstone, Bearsted, Leeds etc.
