SO8639 : Saxons Lode Oil Storage Facility
I believe these oil storage tanks were a target for the Luftwaffe during the war. I remember my father telling me that they missed their target, instead the bombs fell on the meadows to the northeast of Upton. The error was as a result over confusing the railway bridge (now no longer there) and the road bridge into Upton a mile or so up stream.
I've searched the internet and the only record of bombing at Upton I have found was on this site:
http://www.raf.mod.uk/bob1940/july27.html which states Upton was bombed on the night of 27th July 1940.
