Village cross, Houghton Hall
Village cross, Houghton Hall
This was the site of Houghton village, before it was swept away by Sir Robert Walpole (1st Earl of Orford and the first British Prime Minister) in the early 1700's when the Hall was built and the park enclosed. This village cross, a few earthworks and the church of St Martin are all that remain of the medieval settlement. In 1729 Estate cottages were built for estate workers outside the park gates.
