Fir Pound on Ogden's Purlieu, New Forest
Fir Pound on Ogden's Purlieu, New Forest
Across the wet heath of Ogden's Purlieu is Fir Pound - this small plantation was site of the first recorded planting of Scots pine on Crown lands in the New Forest. It showed that much of the "waste" land (the heaths) could be put to use as silvicultural inclosures, and heightened the tension between Commoners (who wanted the land for grazing) and the timber-loving state.
