Flowering bell heather, Longdown Inclosure, New Forest
The Longdown Inclosure is no longer enclosed (fenced) against the grazing stock. Large areas of pines that were planted in the mid 20th century have been felled and not replaced, and heathland is re-establishing itself under the grazing pressure from Commoners' ponies and cattle. This bell heather (Erica cinerea) is common on the better drained parts of the heathland.
