Kincardine Church Mortsafe
Kincardine Church Mortsafe
This contraption called a mortsafe was designed to secure coffins containing the recently buried dead from 'body snatchers' during the C19. This considerable trade in the supply of corpses to medical students for dissection, would often involve the theft of fresh corpses from their graves. The mortsafe was designed to protect a recently interred corpse in its coffin until it was sufficiently decayed, at which time it was then removed.
