Alder carr, Matley Bog, New Forest
Alder carr, Matley Bog, New Forest
This alder carr (swamp) is far from boggy during the dry months of summer - when the waterlogging goes the grass can grow for a season and the ponies come in to the trees to feed. These trees were last coppiced in the 1950s and since stock numbers were at a low ebb the trees had time to re-grow before they could be browsed away. The backlighting in the photo is to increase the visual impact of this strange part of the Forest.
