The sign is rather crudely painted but succeeds in getting over the idea of King Charles II hiding in an oak tree. Following the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, a lot of pubs hurried to take the title The Royal Oak so as to demonstrate their loyalty to the crown. Many survive today, and it is interesting to see how much their signs differ. Another interpretation can be seen here:- SU8900 : The Royal Oak pub sign, Pagham Road, Lagness.

The North Bersted Royal Oak's sign actually has a white background, but in this photograph the sun has reflected the vivid colour of the pub's walls onto the sign to give it a slight pinkish tinge!
