Wheel Shed, Whorlton
Wheel Shed, Whorlton
This barn would have originally housed a horse wheel where one or more horses would have turned a wheel to provide power for agricultural machinery. Wheel sheds are quite common in the North York Moors. Alas most have been converted into quaint "des res". Maybe this one is destined to go the same route.
Horse Gin House
Horse gin houses date from the late 18th or early 19th century and housed a wheel or gin which was turned by a horse walking around in a circle. A belt from the wheel would have been fed into the adjacent barn to provide power for machinery such as a threshing machine.
