The results of bark stripping, Matley Bog, New Forest
When other food is scarce the large herbivores of the forest (ponies, donkeys, deer but not cattle) will strip the outer bark from holly trees to reach the more nutritious inner bark. Their teeth marks leave an interesting textured pattern on the wood.
