Taken by my Great-Uncle, Rev. E. V. Tanner, on an annual family camping holiday in Cornwall, this is a picture of a visit to the Delabole Slate Quarry. The slates will have come from the quarry, possibly on the narrow-gauge railway tracks visible in the picture, having been cut by hand to different sizes. They would then have been stacked vertically in rows according to their dimensions, nowadays this will be carried out by machines that need fewer men. The Delabole Slate Company was established in 1898 when five quarries amalgamated to form one unit. More information on the company can be found on their website at LinkExternal link . Compare this picture with SX0783 : St Teath: Delabole slate yard by Martin Bodman in August 2008 (a gap of 73 years) and it looks like the same building in the background could still be there!
