Samuel Holberry's grave. Sheffield General Cemetery
Samuel Holberry was a young man when he died in York Castle in 1842. As a leading activist in the growing Chartist movement, some would say he was a political prisoner. We need to ask why an estimated 50,000 people attended his funeral when Sheffield's population at the time was just over 100,000. Perhaps he represented the hope of better things to come for ordinary working people.
