The ruined church of St Mary, Appleton
The ruined church of St Mary, Appleton
The round-towered church of St Mary once used to be situated in the village of Appleton - its only neighbour today is Appleton Farm, and no traces remain of the village. The round tower is presumed to be of Saxon origins, nave and chancel were added during the 14th century. After the village had been abandoned the church fell into ruin and chancel and south aisle, the arcading of which can still be seen, collapsed.
