Chapel of St George and St Thomas, Cotehele
Chapel of St George and St Thomas, Cotehele
The chapel is shown amid leafless trees in SX4268 : Chapel in the Woods, and also in SX4268 : Calstock: Chapel-in-the-wood. The story goes that Sir Richard Edgcumbe, who had joined an unsuccessful rebellion against King Richard III, was being pursued by loyalists under Sir Henry Trenowth, and threw his hat into the Tamar at this spot. Seeing the floating hat, his enemies assumed he had drowned, and Sir Richard escaped to France. After Henry VII's accession, he returned from exile and built this tiny chapel in thanks for his deliverance. The date was about 1490. The chapel is described in detail at LinkExternal link .
