The burn is the Allt na Hartaig - one of many which attempt to drain the vast moorland sponge which tops Dunvegan Head. In dry weather, such as this, the burn is a pleasant trickle. After heavy rain, it would become a torrent, which is how it has managed to carve such an impressive ravine.
Walking along the cliff edge to Dunvegan Head from Galtrigill (the nearest road) one encounters several similar ravines. Crossing them is generally possible if a sheep path can be found - there is one visible in this picture. Sheep are not as stupid as they look - they can usually find passable routes through tricky terrain, though the paths can get scarily close to the edge of sheer drops at times!
