St. Lawrence's Chapel : Barforth
St. Lawrence's Chapel : Barforth
The deserted village of Barforth on the south side of the River Tees overlooking Gainford. Has this Chapel, a Dovecote, and a 14th century bridge, still visible today. St. Lawrence's dates from the 12th century and was in use until some time in the 16th century, when it was desecrated after the Reformation, and thereafter it seems to have been converted into a dwelling for one of the priests who remained to minister to the people of the district. Barforth is marked on some maps as 'Old Richmond'.
