In the graveyard of St. Leonard's church. The plaque reads:
"In the millennium year 2000 The Church Community of Chapel Le Dale erected this plaque To the memory of the many men, women and children resident in this Parish between 1870 and 1877 who died through accident or disease during the construction of the Settle to Carlisle Railway and who were buried in this churchyard."
A book by Gerald Tyler states that over 200 people were buried in the churchyard, including many as a result of smallpox. According to the 1871 census there were nearly 1000 people living in the area of the railway workings.
