Speckled wood butterfly by roadside
This common European butterfly, Parage aegeria, lives on honeydew (secreted by aphids) and can overwinter as either larva or pupa. The 'eyes' around its wings may be a protective device, encouraging predators to aim at the wing margins rather than its vital organs.
