The Flying Flock on Ringstead Downs, Norfolk
The Flying Flock on Ringstead Downs, Norfolk
Ringstead Downs is one of the most important sites for wildlife in the country. Until the early part of the century this site was grazed by local people's stock. This had the effect of keeping the area open, which benefited many species of plant and animal that need open conditions in which to survive. In the absence of grazing, some plants and animals that cannot survive in scrub or woodland are threatened. In response to this threat Norfolk Wildlife Trust launched the Flying Flock of sheep in 1993 in order to re-establish grazing on heaths, fens and grasslands around the county. The flock is a mixture of Shetland, Black Welsh Mountain, Hebridean, Herdwick and Beulah sheep which do well on the relatively poor feed on offer.
