SE9721 : Leaving the river

Leaving the river
Leaving the river
The lock gates are closing behind a cruiser leaving the River Ancholme for the Humber.
South Ferriby Lock
The lock has two sets of gates. The tall gates, known as flood gates, will be used when the water level in the Humber is higher than in the river, and the short gates, known as the ebb gates, when the river level is higher. The road bridge spans the lock itself, which means that it has to be raised for the period during which a craft is in the lock while the water levels are adjusted. This means that it can remain open for considerable lengths of time, causing significant queues of road traffic.
