Horkstow Bridge detail
This shows the very simple construction of the bridge deck. Wooden cross beams are simply supported on hangers from the wrought iron chains, and the planks for the roadway laid on top of this. The timberwork dates from the 1990s when tropical hardwood was introduced to increase the load capacity. The underground anchorage ends of the chains were also replaced with high-tensile bars as part of the project.
