Although overlaid by electrical locking, this fine example of mechanical engineering in the signalbox's brick base remains the first line of defence against creation of conflicting train movements. Specialists had to be brought in from India to perform refurbishment in the early 2000s as this form of signalling remains common there, whilst almost extinct in the UK.
