Dundale pond, Levisham Moor.
This pond was probably built about 1230 when the land was given to the monks of Malton Priory as pasture for their sheep, cattle and horses. To this day common rights of Levisham Moor are owned by twenty six local people who hold the various rights to graze over 2000 sheep or a lesser number of cattle; the Right of Turbary (to collect turf for fires); the right of estovers (to collect wood); the right of piscary (to fish) and also the right to graze a limited amount of poultry and horses.
