The Interior of the Church of St Botolph, Skidbrooke
The vast clerestoried nave with its 13th century north and south arcades and relatively tiny chancel with an arch dating back to about 1200. The chancel has this tiled floor - LinkExternal link Please note that although the main body of the church is in this square, the chancel resides in the next grid square to the east.
To the left of the chancel arch is what appears to be a blocked up window. To the right of the chancel arch is something else, which Pevsner, in his Lincolnshire guide, can't make out. The tall recess has a protruding stepped base, much like the bottom of a buttress. The recess extends upwards, all much the same width as the base, as if it was a supporting buttress that was then taken out after the building of the church, when it had served it purpose. Go and take a look for yourself and see what you make of it.
The board reads -
"This church is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.
Although no longer needed for regular worship,
it remains a consecrated building,
a part of England's history,
maintained for the benefit of this
and future generations
