Dartmoor Forest: track to Foggintor
Dartmoor Forest: track to Foggintor
The track appears to be on the course of an old horse-drawn tramway: stone sleeper-blocks are embedded in it. The tramway may well have formed part of the Plymouth & Dartmoor Railway, opened in 1823, at the time when the quarries here were active, although it is not shown as such on the Ordnance Survey 25" map of 1906. Between 1830 and 1840 up to 600 men were employed at Foggintor - originally Royal Oak - and at Swelltor, by King's Tor, and other nearby granite quarries. Field enclosures for Yellowmeade Farm can be seen on the right
