Wakerley: former ironstone quarry
Wakerley: former ironstone quarry
The short-lived Wakerley iron ore quarries were active only from 1916-21 as the ore proved to be of a lower quality than had been hoped. Wakerley quarry was owned by the Partington Iron & Steel Co, the ore going by rail to its Irlam Steel Works in Manchester. Quarrying at Wakerley extended up the valley side as far as the Harringworth road, as the humps and hollows in the fields show. This photograph shows details of a tipping dock. Ore was brought down the hill by a 2ft 6in-gauge railway, which extended up the hill to and just south of the Harringworth road and was originally horse-worked, and tipped into mainline wagons which took the ore to Manchester, the first part of the journey being on the LNWR Peterborough to Market Harborough line, whose remains are behind the camera. In its short life, the tipping dock was extended, in brick.
