Dane John, Canterbury
Dane John, Canterbury
Dane John is the name for this conical mound, about 80 feet high, within the city walls. The mound was probably a pre-Roman burial site but was later used as the base of a Norman castle keep, before the present Canterbury Castle.

The monument on top is a memorial to Alderman Simmons dated 1803.

The bus in the foreground is on the inner ring road, and operated by Stagecoach.
Dane John mound
Sitting just inside the city walls in Dane John gardens, a conical mound, rising 80 feet, which historical records date back to at least the 1st century AD.

Visitors can take a spiral path to the top where there is a monument, dated 1803, to Alderman Simmons, who paid for much of the landscaping in the gardens.
