Manchester Ship Canal Railway seen from Merseyton Road bridge
This is part of the link between the privately owned dockside railways and the mainline. According to John Eyers website this section was double track until 1996. The now disconnected siding seen bearing right in the background led to Cawoods coal terminal. The line we see here bearing left was reopened in 2005 to Manisty Wharf to handle coal imported to feed Fiddlers Ferry power station.
Manchester Ship Canal Railway at Ellesmere Port
According to John Eyres excellent former website 'Manchester Ship Canal and Mersey', the railway lines at Ellesmere Port were in full operation using MSC locomotives until 1996, with branches leading to several wharves and Eastham oil terminal. After 9 years of disuse a single line was reopened in 2005 to Manisty Wharf to handle coal imported to feed Fiddlers Ferry power station.
The branch to Eastham is now very overgrown but the majority of the line is still in place. It gives the impression that, after a little 'pruning' and checking of the rails, it could take trains again tomorrow. It is a great shame that Vauxhall do not use it to receive freight or transport finished cars as it is literally on their doorstep.
