NO5255 : The Aberlemno Cross

taken 8 years ago, near to Aberlemno, Angus, Great Britain

The Aberlemno Cross
The Aberlemno Cross
The east face of the cross is carved with what is interpreted as a battle scene. Note the horsemen riding without stirrups, the bows and spears of the warriors in the middle row, and the fallen man being attacked by a bird at lower right. At the top are two of the symbols which occur widely on Pictish and early Christian carved stones. The meanings of the symbols are the subject of much study and speculation.
