Turbine 1 hub, Westmill Wind Farm, Watchfield
Turbine 1 hub, Westmill Wind Farm, Watchfield
The hub is about 49 metres above ground level. At the tail of the turbine housing is an anemometer to measure wind speed. The anemometer sends data to the automatic controller which can then alter the pitch of the blades to optimise generation capacity. There is an upper limit of wind speed above which it becomes unsafe to allow the blades to continue turning in which case the blades are feathered to stop them turning. That limit has been set at 25 metres per second (56 miles per hour, 100 kilometres per hour) or, in old money, a force 10 gale.
