Trial plots of winter wheat.
All the current and upcoming varieties of winter wheat are grown on trial plots at different sites around the country. They are subject to constant assessment for disease resistance, growth habit, yield with and without fungicide treatments and grain quality post harvest which includes protein content, hagberg quality amongst many tests.
All these findings are correlated and distilled into the National Institute of Agricultural Botany's (NIAB)" The Recommended list" from which the agricultural trade and farmers can plan seed production and use for future planting seasons.
Millers and distillers will also make it known which varieties they prefer for the type of flour product or distillate they are producing.
