Harby Hill: former ironstone railway workshop and lorry shed
Ironstone was quarried in the Eastwell area from 1881, when a double-acting cable-worked incline was built to carry narrow-gauge wagons up and down Harby Hill, to a tipping dock at Stathern Sidings on the GN&LNWJt Railway from Nottingham to Melton Mowbray and Market Harborough. To see the course of the incline, which began just to the left, click LinkExternal link. The brick building - now one of the outbuildings of Muffet Lodge - was one of the railway workshops of the 3ft-gauge Eastwell Iron Ore Company railway (there were more, and an engine shed, just south of the bridleway behind the camera, where the former railway cutting has been filled in). The railway system was once extensive, bringing ore from as far away as Branston. The incline winding house stood to the left of the workshop, and I stood where there were once sidings to take this photograph. The incline closed on 16 August 1960 and for a few more years, until quarrying ceased completely in 1967, ore was taken down Harby Hill to the tipping dock by lorry. The iron shed on the right was the garage for the tipper lorries.
