SP2772 : Kenilworth Castle
near to Kenilworth, Warwickshire, Great Britain

Kenilworth Castle
The original castle was a wooden motte & bailey structure, subsequently rebuilt in red sandstone with a large keep in the mid 12th century and strengthened in the 13th century. After the end of the English Civil War in 1649, Oliver Cromwell's parliamentarian troops "slighted" the stronghold. They destroyed the north wall, as can be seen in the picture and the whole castle was then allowed to decay to the ruins seen today.
