The trees on Oliver's Castle can be seen for many miles. SU0064
Note the crinkly hillside, geologists tell us this was caused by the run off of melt water at the end of the last ice age.
Good Wiltshire farmland lies beyond.
Hugh Venables adds the following: "These are all periglacial (=tundra) landforms/features so they date from glacial periods but are not formed by the presence of glacial ice. There are also punchbowls elsewhere, such as the Surrey heaths, the local geology is probably key in setting the shapes - they aren't corries as seen further north. The multiple channels are formed by surface runoff, during permafrost periods when there is meltwater every summer but impermeable ice below."
