Stainby: the last bridge on the High Dyke Branch
Stainby: the last bridge on the High Dyke Branch
The Great Northern Railway High Dyke Branch, built during the Great War to carry iron ore from the iron-rich area south of Grantham, made an end-on junction with the Buckminster quarries railway system at Stainby, and opened in 1916. (The Buckminster system also had a southern junction with the main line, at Buckminster Sidings on the Saxby & Bourne Railway, which had opened in 1898.) Quarrying, which extended over the parishes of Stainby, Sewstern, Gunby, Buckminster, North Witham and Thistleton, ceased in the 1970s and the land has been restored to agriculture. This is the southern side of the blue-brick GNR bridge which carried the Buckminster-Stainby road over the railway immediately north of Stainby Station - which wasn’t a station in the accepted sense, but just a single siding. There were extensive interchange sidings north of this bridge, and some of the last of the Buckminster quarries, Stainby Glebe, worked till 1973.
