Former ironstone railway engine shed
Sewstern Industrial Estate was originally, and for 75 years, the headquarters of the Buckminster Quarries railway system, a complex system which connected to the main lines via the High Dyke Branch from Stainby to the north, and, to the south, at Buckminster Sidings on the Saxby to Bourne line. Quarrying extended over the parishes of Stainby, Sewstern, Gunby, Buckminster, North Witham and Thistleton and ceased in 1973. These corrugated-iron buildings were originally engine sheds, but from 1930-64 were used as fitting shops, where major repairs were carried out. I am standing where the "main line" ran through the yards. The level crossing over the Sewstern to Gunby road was just to the left of the sheds (whose east walls are probably in the next gridsquare, though the vast majority of what is in this picture is in SK8921)
