NS4281 : Remains of a lime-kiln

Remains of a lime-kiln
Remains of a lime-kiln
The kiln is marked on the first-edition map (c.1860); it had, even then, already been derelict for many years.

The remains are in poor condition, and are shown here as a mound that fills the width of the image. The kiln would have been circular in design, but the mound is now open on its south-western side. This photograph is a view towards that opening, and a rock can be seen lying between the two arms of the mound.

For a different view, see NS4281 : Remains of a lime-kiln.

The first-edition map and the current map both show the kiln as being located beside (as usual) a burn. On the occasion of my visit, the ground was rather marshy here, but no burn was evident, although the topography of the ground makes it clear that one has flowed through the area. A period of dry weather may have accounted for its absence when this picture was taken.

There are NS4281 : Traces of limestone quarrying nearby, as well as some prominent NS4281 : Limestone outcrops.
Remains of lime-kiln
These remains are annotated as an "old limekiln" on the first-edition OS map (c.1860); they probably date to the eighteenth or early nineteenth century. The kiln would have been a circular structure of dry-stone construction.
Network of old limestone industry tracks :: NS4379
A very extensive network of ancient tracks on the moors in West Dunbartonshire links old quarries, ruined lime-kilns, and other sites connected with the local limestone-burning industry, which flourished in the 18th century. See LinkExternal link for a Geograph article about the network, and LinkExternal link for an annotated satellite view of it.
