Remains of a lime-kiln
Remains of a lime-kiln
See NS4281 : Remains of a lime-kiln for the main description. As noted there, the mound is open on the south-western side. The opening is not apparent in the present photograph, in which it is located at the right-hand side of the mound.

This side-on view shows more of Auchincarroch Muir, in which the ruin is located.
Remains of lime-kiln
These remains are annotated as an "old limekiln" on the first-edition OS map (c.1860); they probably date to the eighteenth or early nineteenth century. The kiln would have been a circular structure of dry-stone construction.
Network of old limestone industry tracks :: NS4379
A very extensive network of ancient tracks on the moors in West Dunbartonshire links old quarries, ruined lime-kilns, and other sites connected with the local limestone-burning industry, which flourished in the 18th century. See LinkExternal link for a Geograph article about the network, and LinkExternal link for an annotated satellite view of it.
