Former ironstone railway yard
Former ironstone railway yard
Sewstern Industrial Estate was originally, and for 75 years, the headquarters of the Buckminster Quarries railway, a complex system which connected to the main lines via the High Dyke Branch from Stainby to the north, and, to the south, at Buckminster Sidings on the Saxby to Bourne line. Quarrying extended over the parishes of Stainby, Sewstern, Gunby, Buckminster, North Witham and Thistleton and ceased in 1973. Although largely new, the large grey shed in the centre incorporates some parts of the machine shop of 1964, nicknamed “The Giraffe House” because of its height, which was much greater than that of the current building. After the quarry railway closed, there was a short-lived attempt at railway preservation here, in partnership with Flying Scotsman Enterprises, which was based in the old ironstone engine sheds at Market Overton LinkExternal link . Hard though it is to believe, the work to section the Southern Railway locomotive 35029 “Ellerman Lines”, an exhibit at the National Railway Museum in York LinkExternal link , was done here in South Lincolnshire, in The Giraffe House. The preservation attempt came to an end in 1974, and the former railway buildings here are now in light industrial use.
