Cave at South Horn
Cave at South Horn
I hadn't realised until we were on our way back to Anstruther that the South Horn stands on top of a sea cave. All the caves her are tall and narrow, in keeping with the vertical grain of the rock, which has acquired vertical cracks on cooling. The implication of this is that the island was formed as a sill by molten rock intruded between beds deep underground. It cooled slowly enough to have crystals lareg enough to be seen with the naked eye, but fast enough to cause jointing as it shrank.
