Lime-kiln ruin in lower Auchenreoch Glen
Lime-kiln ruin in lower Auchenreoch Glen
The sun was shining when I took this photograph, but it is simply unable to reach this part of the deep, steep-sided NS4178 : Auchenreoch Glen during the winter months (see NS4178 : Lime-kiln ruin in lower Auchenreoch Glen for another view, taken several months later).

The background shows the southern side of the glen, most of which is too steep for vegetation to have established itself there. However, this lack of vegetation allows the conspicuous stratification of the rock to be seen (NS4178 : Ballagan Beds in Auchenreoch Glen). These layers include nodules of cementstone, an impure form of limestone which was occasionally burned in kilns: see NS4178 : Cementstone nodule in Auchenreoch Glen.

As for the kiln, its remains are visible in this photograph as a circular pit on the near side of the glen. The kiln is shown on the first-edition OS map (c.1860), but dates from a considerably earlier period. Most examples of lime-kilns in this area are located right next to a burn, but this particular example is perched partway up the northern side of the glen.

A long ridge that runs close to the northern side of the glen makes this area a little more accessible than it would otherwise be; the same route was presumably followed by those who used this kiln: NS4178 : Ridge leading into Auchenreoch Glen.
Remains of lime-kiln
This ruin is indicated on the first-edition OS map (c.1860). It is all that remains of a kiln that was used in the eighteenth or early nineteenth century. The glen in which it is located is rich in limestone deposits (some of them in the form of cementstone nodules).
