Northern Marsh-orchid (Dactylorhiza purpurella)
[In this case, Dactylorhiza purpurella ssp. purpurella.]

This flower was growing conspicuously among the grass on the western side of the cycle route, at the location shown in NS3976 : Cycle Route 7 at Dennystown Forge.

Despite its common name, Northern Marsh-orchid is not confined to marshes, but "can also be found in large numbers in damp ditches, dune slacks, road verges and undisturbed gardens" ["Wild Orchids of Scotland", Allan/Woods/Clarke, 1993].
