The trackbed of the Buckminster Quarries railway south of Mill Lane (where there was a level crossing) became a farm track after the railway closed. This old railway sleeper, with the marks of the iron rail chair and the four bolts which held it in place, looks as if it was used as a gate stop for the iron gate which replaced the wooden level crossing gate.
The opening of the Saxby & Bourne Railway in 1893 led to an expansion of iron ore quarrying in South Lincolnshire (the Buckminster Quarries) and Rutland (at Market Overton). Buckminster Quarries built a railway north from Buckminster Sidings on the S&B to its first quarries north of the Sewstern to Gunby road. In 1916, the building of the Great Northern Railway High Dyke Branch to Stainby gave Buckminster Quarries another main line outlet, and over the next 50 years quarrying was carried out on a massive scale in the parishes of Stainby, Sewstern, Gunby, Buckminster, North Witham and Thistleton. The last ore despatched from the southern outlet, via the Saxby & Bourne and bound for Irlam Steelworks in Manchester, was in 1963, but later, briefly, ore from Market Overton was worked north over its line to Painís Siding (SK887189), a short stretch of the S&B, the Buckminster system and the High Dyke. All quarrying ended in 1973, the land has been restored and returned to agricultural use and the remaining traces of the ironstone railways (and the Saxby & Bourne) are mostly overgrown or ploughed away.
